Why Environmental Assessments Matter to MMBC

At MMBC, we see environmental assessments not just as a checklist item but as a key part of our work. It’s about making sure that as we work on new projects, we’re taking care of our land and water—the same environment that has supported the Mi’gmaq communities for generations. It’s a big responsibility, but we’re committed to ensuring our projects are suitable for our community and the planet.

Understanding Before Acting

Before we start any project, especially something as big as setting up new energy sources or working with natural resources, we look deeply into the environmental impact. This isn’t just about following rules. It’s about understanding what our projects will mean for the land, water, and all living things around them. It's about finding ways to do what we need without causing harm and, if there are impacts, figuring out how to minimize them.

Listening to All Voices

A significant aspect of our environmental assessments is the inclusion of all voices. This includes not only experts and scientists but also our community members, who possess invaluable knowledge of the land. We blend this traditional wisdom with modern science, enriching our assessments and making them more meaningful. This approach ensures that our projects respect our history and the cultural significance of our lands, emphasizing the integral role our community plays in this process.

A Better Way Forward

Through these assessments, we strive to identify projects that bring economic benefits and align with a cleaner, greener future. We are particularly enthusiastic about renewable energy projects, which we believe are crucial in the fight against climate change. This commitment is our way of contributing to a larger cause, ensuring that we are part of the solution and inspiring hope for a better future.

Next Up: A Closer Look at a Big Project

With this understanding of why we take environmental assessments so seriously, we’re setting the stage to tell you more about one of our key projects. Stay tuned for “The Wind of Change: Environmental Assessment of the Mesgi'g Ugju's'n 2 Wind Project.” We’ll dive into how this project is carefully planned to bring clean energy to our communities while protecting our environment. It’s a great example of how we’re trying to balance progress with preservation.
