Board member

Derek Barnaby has over thirty-five years of experience in the revitalization of Mi’gmaq culture and traditions. He is married to an Anishinaabe from Aundek Omni Kaning, Ontario. They have a son and a daughter who are active in sports and many cultural activities. He has served his community as an elected member of Council for 12 years and held a portfolio in both Fisheries and Clean Renewable Energy. He continues to serve the three partnering communities of Gesgapegiaq, Gespeg and Listuguj as a Board Member of the MMBC. Derek was named as a Board member to the Mesgi’g Ugjus’n Wind Farm Development and as Board Member and Chairperson to the MMBC where he was influential in the development of its policies and governance manual.

Derek is a graduate from Cape Breton University with a degree in Community Studies and is a Master trainer in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). He is currently developing a cultural safety training presentation to bridge together businesses and surrounding communities to create long lasting and meaningful relationships.
